ARTIST JORGE GOMEZ

Review: Jorge Gómez Restrepo (Medellín, 1961) studied at the San Francisco Art Institute (USA 1980 - 1985).

His career, in our national context, began in 1988 (in the United States he had already had his first one-man exhibit in the Diego Rivera Gallery). That same year he participated in different exhibits in the city of Medellín (La Oficina Gallery, Central Library Art Hall, University of Antioquia and the VIII Version of the Arthur and Rebecca Rabinovich Salon). Two years later he has his first exhibit in Bogotá, in the framework of the Nuevos Nombres (New Names) exhibit program of the Plastic Arts Division of the Bank of the Republic. Carolina Ponce de León, the curator, exhibited his work alongside that of two of the most outstanding artists of his generation: Ana Patricia Palacios (1961) y Delcy Morelos (1967).

This exhibition revealed the creative power of his work precisely because of the strong contrast it established with respect to the work of the other two artists. In the words of the curator, “The thick impasto, the strong structural axes in the work of Jorge Gómez, his constructive system and his brushwork take on a dynamics neighboring with the forces of nature. And yet, despite the forceful tensions which constitute the groundwork for establishing this comparison, there is no naturalism, there is no description, but rather a coming together of forces which produce a peculiar psychological ambiance” (Ponce de Léon, Carolina. In: Nuevos Nombres [New Names])

In 2006 he has a one-man exhibit in the Museum of Antioquia, which proves to be an important homage to the artist. Jorge Gómez has built a solid trajectory in the world of painting. In this sense, his oeuvre has led him to stand out as one of the most relevant artists of the art scene in our country.

A propos of the oeuvre of Jorge Gómez

A propos of the oeuvre of Jorge Gómez, the artist from Antioquia. By Luis Fernando Valencia, Art Critic.

"On observing a painting by Jorge Gómez, the first thing that makes itself visible is its material generosity, the color pigment that seems to detach itself from the canvas. But the painter carries out a primeval plastic strategy by which the oil itself becomes representation, that is to say, not belonging to an inert world, but becoming rather a vehicle of meaning.

A second maneuver strips the representation of its mimetic aspect, in other words, of its loyalty to reality; and a third operation leaves the work in an autonomous stance. We are now facing a painting which is totally independent from its starting point. From inertness to meaning, from here to another reality, in an independent pictorial state distant by far from the initial model.

Space now abandons any form of effectism and emerges with pristine clarity: nothing has been placed at random, nothing is groundless. And there is something surprising. Space establishes a dialogue with itself, without losing definition; it seems to pursue self-elaboration of its own accord". (...)
